Technical Instructor in Drama Production

Consistently ranked by Princeton Review on its top ten list of best college theater programs, Bennington College seeks an experienced technical director to begin in February 2019. This technical instructor leadership position is responsible for managing the scene shop and student workers in order to collaboratively implement scenic designs for drama productions (typically 4 per year) and provide technical support for classes and independent student projects. This is a salaried, full time, year-round position with benefits. Some evening/weekend hours will be required.

ResponsibilitiesOversee the scene shop and construction of all scenic elements, special effects, and custom props; instruct students doing set construction labs & supervise work-study students; organize and track completion of drama production lab assignments; budget and create technical drawings/drafting of scenic elements; order materials/supplies; plan and execute scenic builds, load-ins, and load outs; collaborate with faculty/staff to ensure smooth workflow for all involved; attend production meetings & technical rehearsals; reconfigure seating risers as needed; oversee scene shop & scenery budgets; maintain a clean and safe scene shop; supervise storage, inventory and maintenance of all scenic elements, shop tools and equipment; lead by example to ensure that the scene shop & performance space work environments are safe, humane, and respectful; develop creative solutions to design challenges within the constraints of time, resources, and practicality; provide technical support for classes and independent student projects; liaise with Buildings & Grounds department regarding general maintenance of the performance spaces and scene shop.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and technical production experience at the professional or collegiate level; experience in scenic construction, rigging and stage mechanics, stage carpentry and metalworking, and the use of standard theatrical materials; knowledge of theatrical drawing, including scaled plans, and show budgeting; knowledge of Autocad and/or Vectorworks; experience training and managing students.

Physical Requirements: Manual dexterity; able to lift, push, pull or otherwise maneuver up to 50lbs repeatedly; able to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time; able to work at heights, on ladders or mechanical lift.
