Associate Director of Campus Safety

Bennington College seeks applications for a highly engaged and community-oriented Associate Director of Campus Safety to work to ensure a safer environment for its community.  Supporting the director, the Associate Director ensures compliance with community standards set forth in policies by the College, and acts to promote goodwill for the College community. Bennington’s Campus Safety approach is one of harm and risk-reduction, and is focused on finding the learning moments possible in any given interaction, honoring student growth and development.

The Office of Campus Safety believes that Bennington College students, faculty, and staff all have a role in ensuring the security of the community. Campus Safety supports the student experience in a collaborative manner working with College constituents, community organizations and public safety agencies. Each member of the Bennington community assumes the personal responsibility for creating an environment free from physical and/or sexual violence, hate speech, harassment, vandalism, theft and other policy violations. The security of the College is not limited to the physical safety of people and personal property. It also requires the preservation of a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere in which all may advocate for their own rights, as well as those of others, and where differing views are included and embraced.

The Associate Director of Campus Safety must demonstrate a positive attitude toward students, employees and guests of the campus.  The ideal candidate will be engaging, innovative, and have the ability to develop strong internal and external working relationships.  The associate director is expected to engage with the more than 700 students on campus in ways that promote community-building and learning. The associate director oversees dispatch, the transportation program, staff schedules and ensure adequate coverage for all shifts.  The associate director assists in leading all aspects of campus safety, serves as an investigator, and supports the hiring, development and supervision of Campus Safety staff, developing a proactive approach to preventing, handling and resolving campus safety matters.The associate director assists with policy review and development as well as enforcement, safety education, and emergency/crisis management. Importantly, the associate director functions as proxy in the director’s absence and is required to use sound reasoning and judgement.

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.  Minimum 3-5 years of campus safety, law enforcement, or relevant experience required.  Prior supervisory experience strongly preferred.
  • Must have demonstrated experience and ability to work with a diverse student population, and inclusive practices.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.  Must be certified, or able to obtain certifications upon employment in CPR, First Aid and AED certification and maintain certification throughout employment.  The position requires successful completion of background/DMV check, and National Safety Council DDC-9.
  • Must be effective and work well in a collaborative environment.  Excellent organizational skills and the ability to determine work priorities, make rapid and appropriate decisions, and delegate work to others as appropriate.
  • Must have strong communication skills, including the ability to provide clear verbal and written communication, in a courteous and professional manner with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and listening skills, with keen attention to detail.
  • Must be able to remain calm during stressful situations and assure that the highest standards of confidentiality, discretion and fairness are maintained. The ability to handle sensitive or confidential information with proper judgement is critical.
  • Must have a high attention to detail and accomplish tasks independently with limited supervision.    
  • Strong technology proficiency with experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, Gmail and Google Drive.  Ability to adapt to and use changing technology.
