Managing Editor of the Bennington Review

Bennington Review, a faculty-edited, nationally-distributed biannual print literary magazine of innovative fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction housed at Bennington College, seeks a part-time Managing Editor based in either New York City or Bennington, Vermont. The Managing Editor will facilitate the week-to-week operations of the magazine including preparing each issue for copy editing and publication; overseeing website content; managing publicity and social media; liaising with contributors, subscribers, distributors, the designer, and the printer; fulfilling subscriptions; overseeing and reconciling the budget; recording sales and expenditures; maintaining up-to-date subscription and shipping databases; organizing occasional readings and issue launches; promoting the journal at the annual AWP Associated Writing Programs Conference; bookstore outreach; and helping develop strategies and projects to expand and diversify the magazine’s reach, visibility, and impact.

 

The successful candidate will have familiarity with the contemporary literary landscape, as well as with literary magazines and/or small press publishing. They need to be a well-organized, flexible, and efficient multi-tasker and problem-solver who excels at working collaboratively, as well as independently and remotely. The ability to become quickly proficient with SquareSpace, social media platforms, Google Sheets, Word and Excel, and FileMaker Pro is expected, in addition to proofreading and bookkeeping skills. Prior experience working for a literary journal, press, or publicist is preferred. This is a 15-hour-a-week position; commonly two-to-four hours each week are dedicated to in-person meetings in Brooklyn, NY, (or Bennington, VT) with the Editor.
