Bennington College, a liberal arts college distinguished for its pioneering initiatives in higher education, seeks a Writer to join a fast-paced and collaborative communications office charged with advancing the College’s strategic priorities.

The primary responsibilities of this position are to research, conceive, draft, and edit opinion pieces, speeches, letters, social media posts, and other communications from the President and, at times, other College leadership or members of the College community. This work will be focused on advancing the strategic communications goals of the College by cultivating opportunities for Bennington voices to participate in and influence the national conversation around higher education, culture, and work.

This role will also include managing the text components of select materials being created by the design team. This work entails researching, writing, editing, and proofing content contained in some of the College’s digital and print publications -- whether originating from the Communications, Admissions, Institutional Advancement, or other offices within the College.

Successful candidates will be able to generate original ideas, write clearly and thoughtfully, and execute high-quality materials for sophisticated audiences. Successful candidates will demonstrate flexibility, curiosity about the world and current events, and an ability to build relationships across the institution. This person should be able to plan strategically, manage projects, hit deadlines, and leverage opportunities.

Demonstrated ability to produce polished written pieces in various formats: speeches, long form features, talking points, essays, briefing memos, and social media content. Wit, humor, intelligence. Demonstrated ability to generate ideas and write thoughtfully about issues including higher education, work, inclusion, and equality. Journalism background and/or experience placing pieces is a plus. We encourage applications from a diversity of backgrounds and sectors; candidates with a minimum of five years experience with speechwriting or creating content for mission-driven brands will be particularly well matched. The capacity to set priorities in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency in PowerPoint, Adobe Creative Suite, Google applications, Microsoft Office, and Basecamp would be a plus. BA degree.
