Senior/Director of Annual Giving

Bennington College is seeking an entrepreneurial, innovative and enthusiastic candidate to become the Senior/Director of an evolving Annual Giving program.  The new Advancement leadership team is excited to partner with a passionate development professional who is willing to build upon past successes by creating and executing fresh ideas and best practices that will take the Bennington Fund to the next level. This is a unique opportunity to build a team, expand a program, and make a tremendous impact at a highly-acclaimed liberal arts college.  

Bennington’s Office of Institutional Advancement is preparing for a $100M+ comprehensive campaign, which will allow the College to enhance student and faculty support as well as dramatically increase its endowment. In support of this ambitious campaign, Bennington is realigning and growing the institutional advancement team.  The new major and leadership gifts, planned giving, annual giving, and foundation relations teams will focus on strengthening existing relationships and building new ones with Bennington’s 10,000+ alumni, parents, and friends.  The development team will be charged with increasing new gifts and pledges ($17.7M in FY16) and the current alumni participation rate of 23%.

As Director of Annual Giving you will have the opportunity to:

  • Manage a portfolio of 50 – 75 prospects with giving potential of $50k - $100k
  • Lead a team of two (assistant director and an associate)
  • Oversee the rebranding and marketing of the Bennington Fund’s giving societies
  • Develop and execute new ways of engaging alumni, parents, and students through social media, electronic communications, events, videos, and related outlets
  • Partner with the President and Provost to further the goals of the Bennington Fund by developing and implementing challenges and campaigns
  • Collaborate with major gift officers regarding high-level annual fund cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies

In addition to having a good sense of humor and a desire to have fun at work, candidates should bring:

  • A minimum of six years of development experience with progressively increasing responsibilities
  • Proven track record of soliciting and closing gifts at the $50k level
  • Experience with volunteer engagement, management and training
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, organizational and analytical skills, and project management skills
  • A bachelor’s degree (master’s degree a plus)
  • Strong technology orientation (Gmail/Google docs, Microsoft Suite, donor database software); Raiser’s Edge experience preferred
  • Excitement to travel on behalf of the College
  • Requires successful background check
  • Preference for candidates who possess comprehensive campaign and management experience
