Web Developer

Bennington, Vermont, United States Full-time

Bennington College seeks a creative and agile end-to-end Web Developer to join its award-winning communications team. This newly created position will play a leading role in evolving and expanding Bennington’s web site and the College’s other public-facing digital properties. Developers whose portfolio of work combines technical expertise with engaging user-centered design, immersive storytelling, innovation, and beautyvalues at the heart of the Bennington experience—will be particularly well matched.

The web developer collaborates with colleagues in the Communications Office, Information Technology, and others at Bennington to understand and solve for a diverse set of web-based marketing and communications needs. From site build-outs to theming to specialty applications, the Web Developer is responsible for building, testing, deploying, maintaining, supporting, and enhancing web properties oriented primarily to external audiences—prospective students, alumni and families, donors, and others who influence public perception. For relevant projects, the web developer oversees quality assurance testing, upgrades, patches, and new releases and integrates third-party sites as needed.

In addition to managing a range of large- and small-scale development projects, the Web Developer keeps an informed eye on leading-edge technology, tools, and approaches to support the College’s evolving communications needs, and actively exchanges knowledge and expertise with colleagues. The Web Developer maintains site analytics and partners with colleagues within the College to design and generate reports to inform decisions about search, user experience, and site optimization.

Successful candidates will be highly skilled and trained programmers able to draw from a variety of programming languages and platforms: expert knowledge of web scripting languages such as PHP and other object-oriented languages; demonstrated proficiency with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and SQL; and experience with Drupal and WordPress. They will have a background in developing websites within editorial and/or higher education environments that demand frequent publishing, collaboration, problem-solving, and content-specific design. A BA degree and a minimum of four years web development experience are required.

We encourage applications from a diversity of backgrounds and sectors. The position is full time, and includes occasional evening and weekend duties.
