Human Resources Assistant

Bennington College seeks an engaging and highly organized professional to provide administrative support to the Office of Human Resources within a vibrant and growing campus community. The human resources assistant serves as an ambassador of the office, and therefore must possess the ability to exercise good judgement in a variety of situations and with a broad range of individuals. Of critical importance is the ability to work with a diverse employee population and support our commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive community.  

The human resources assistant provides general administrative support for all program initiatives within the department, provides direct administrative support to the director of human resources and also supports the work of the Human Resources staff.  The human resources assistant performs a wide range of administrative functions including:

  • Manage calendars, organize meetings/events/interviews, draft and edit correspondence
  • Assist with budgeting and recruitment efforts, manage onboarding for new hires
  • Handle inquiries/calls and interface with a host of internal and external constituents including employees and applicants
  • Maintain/update staff personnel files and HRIS, as well as process employee changes to payroll in a timely and accurate manner
  • Help to coordinate social programming for staff events
  • Coordinate with staff in other offices of the College on a range of projects and initiatives  

The ideal candidate will be meticulously organized and incredibly nimble - able to successfully guide people and projects in a fast-paced, small team environment. The assistant must be an effective communicator, an adept and tactical scheduler, and an agile multi-tasker.  The position demands the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion, prioritize competing work and deadlines and produce highly accurate work. Of critical importance in this role is the ability to anticipate the needs of the office and maintain a pulse on pending work ensuring timely and appropriate attention and follow-up.The capacity for clear, thoughtful communication and an eagle eye for detail are crucial.

Additional qualifications include a bachelor’s degree, relevant administrative experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment; preference for candidates who have previous experience working in human resources.  Candidates must be creative problem-solvers and possess strong communication skills - demonstrating an ability to build relationships and develop partnerships with a host of individuals. The position requires exemplary organizational skills, remarkable attention to detail and strong technology orientation/proficiency using Gmail, Google Drive, MS Office; HRIS (ADP Workforce Now and eTIME) experience preferred.
