Accounts Payable Specialist

Bennington College seeks an engaging, motivated and detail-oriented professional to join the Business Office team.  The Accounts Payable Specialist reports to the Assistant Controller and will work collaboratively with the Business Office, other departments and external vendors to provide a superior customer service experience, one that is both positive and effective.

The Accounts Payable Specialist will primarily be responsible for reviewing and processing payments to vendors via weekly check runs.  This includes reconciling invoices, check requests, expense reports and monthly credit card bills for appropriate documentation and approval prior to processing.  You will also handle all vendor and staff inquiries regarding accounts payable matters and will work to resolve discrepancies in a timely and effective manner.  The Accounts Payable Specialist will work with the Purchasing Agent to establish and maintain an efficient purchasing process through financial accounting software.   In addition, you will assist with annual preparation of year-end 1099 tax forms, required schedules and documentation for the external auditors and provide any overflow assistance or duties as requested to support the Business Office.  

The successful candidate will demonstrate the following qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Basic knowledge of accounting principles, practices and methods
  • 1-2 years professional experience, preferably in an accounting/finance position
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), ability to create and maintain positive relations and open communication with a variety of constituents
  • Attention to detail and superior organizational ability
  • Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially and with discretion as well as the ability to exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain business relationships and resolve sensitive personnel matters through mediation and negotiation
  • Previous data entry experience as well as the ability to track and meet frequent deadlines.  
  • Ability to learn and master new and changing technology
  • Previous experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Intacct financial accounting software preferred
