First Year Advisor

Bennington College, Office of Academic Services, invites applications for the position of First-Year Advisor.  The First-Year Advisor reports to the Director of the First-Year Experience and International Student Services and will work collaboratively with faculty advisors to assist new students as they acquire an emerging understanding of the capacities of a Bennington education, the Plan Process, the student/faculty advising relationship, work/life balance, what it means to engage inclusively with community members and the world at large, and campus resources. First year advising strives to prepare first-year students to become autonomous, self reliant Bennington students capable of self advocacy and able to define and articulate their educational and personal goals.

In addition to advising a caseload of first-year students, the First-Year Advisor will be responsible for the first-generation college student program, weekly contributions to academic  newsletter, and will have an integral role in the process of transitioning students to campus from the point of deposit through new student orientation. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate substantial experience with programming, project management and/or event planning.

Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to supporting students through a collaborative and team-oriented approach, and also have the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously, work independently, thrive in a high paced environment, and be comfortable taking initiative and being self directed. The position requires detailed organization, flexibility taking on tasks of varying depths and detail, experience with marketing (print, electronic, and social media),as well as strong technology skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office with advanced knowledge of Excel; experience using Gmail/drive preferred. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a minimum of 2 years of relevant advising experience, can demonstrate success advising, planning and implementing programming, team building and event planning for college aged students in a small liberal arts environment.  A Bachelor’s degree is required with an advanced degree preferred.
