Assistant to the Vice President for Finance and Administration

Bennington College seeks a highly organized professional to provide support to the Vice President for Finance and Administration.  The Assistant serves as the right hand to the Vice President and as such, s/he must be an effective communicator, an adept and tactical scheduler, and an agile multi-tasker.  The position demands the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion, prioritize competing work and deadlines and produce accurate work.  

The Assistant to the Vice President for Finance and Administration performs a wide range of administrative functions - managing the Vice President’s calendar, organizing meetings/events, handling calls/inquiries, interfacing with both internal and external constituents including board members, financial institutions and at times, parents/families.  The Assistant is responsible for drafting and editing correspondence and other written materials -- and works to anticipate the needs of the Vice President to effectively support his work. The capacity for clear, thoughtful communication and an eye for detail are crucial. The position requires the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations as well as the ability to work with good humor and grace under pressure and tight deadlines. The Assistant provides support for all program initiatives and operations within the department and supports the work of the Business Office staff.  The Assistant also coordinates with staff in other offices of the College on a range of projects and initiatives. Thus the top candidate will have experience working effectively with a variety of people and personalities as well as possess discretion and flexibility.

Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree, relevant administrative experience with a preference for candidates who bring demonstrated experience working independently to support a senior level manager/executive in a brisk, team-oriented setting; experience with accounting and tax filings through prior work is preferred but not required.  Of critical importance is the ability to maintain integrity of confidential financial information and deal with sensitive situations with diplomacy and tact.  The position requires proficiency using MS Office and Google Suite.  Candidates must be creative problem-solvers and possess strong communication skills - demonstrating an ability to effectively deal with a host of individuals and a range of complex matters.
