Bennington College seeks a faculty member in filmmaking/moving image to teach three courses per year in film/video production and film/media theory, a permanent 58% FTE hire starting in the academic year 2022-23. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in teaching film/video production at the college level; some experience or interest in teaching film theory/history/criticism; possess a solid conceptual, technical and theoretical understanding of contemporary film; and possess a strong exhibition and/or screening record.

We are interested in filmmakers and moving image artists and scholars with a broad range of practices and interests, including in narrative filmmaking, documentary filmmaking, expanded media practices, contemporary art-centered practices, and/or theoretical and critical writing practices. We also welcome applicants whose professional practices and methods are multidisciplinary and not easily categorizable, as long as they are centered in the moving image arts. We are particularly interested in applicants whose work engages with communities, histories, and discourses that have been historically under-represented, whether due to race, class, gender, orientation, disability, religion, global geography, or any combination therein. In their teaching and artistic background, the successful candidate will demonstrate promise for curricular development that invites the participation of students with a broad range of artistic and academic interests. 

Faculty members at Bennington are teacher-practitioners whose professional work is in ongoing dialogue with their teaching and advising. The structure of this position allows for robust and ongoing professional advancement during non-teaching or low-teaching terms. The successful candidate can expect to teach three courses per year, to advise students year-round, and to serve on committees. While this position is projected to start in Spring 2023 as a one-semester-per-year position, the future distribution of teaching responsibilities across semesters can be flexible, and may be designed and adjusted according to the professional needs of the hired candidate, as well as overall curricular needs.
