Faculty Position in Media Studies at Bennington College

Bennington, Vermont, United States | Full-time

Bennington College seeks a full-time faculty member in media studies, beginning Fall 2022. The ideal candidate’s work will be a balance of theory and practice, with a focus within one or more of the following areas: critical media theory, feminist media, digital culture, journalism, social media and network culture, media archaeology, race and technology, big data, or media avant-gardes. Candidates are especially welcomed to apply who stand to engage students’ critical decision-making and empathic capacities; to bridge combinations of thinking, working, making, and/or taking action; and to advance college-wide goals of diversity, equity and inclusion. Applicants for this position should have an established record of publication and/or production and should be poised to teach at the intersection of media theory, history, culture, and technology. Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. in Media Studies or MFA or equivalent attainment in a related field. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing a broad range of undergraduate courses in media studies ranging from the introductory to advanced levels.

Bennington College is a small residential liberal arts college in southern Vermont, long distinguished for its progressive approach to higher education. The College was founded in 1932 on the principle of active engagement in learning, which is manifest in individualized plans of study developed by students together with faculty. Bennington’s open curricular structures facilitate innovative teaching across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Faculty members at Bennington are teacher-practitioners whose professional work is in ongoing dialogue with their teaching and advising. Faculty teach five courses per year, and fully engaged student advising is an expectation. Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to developing a curriculum that invites the participation of students with a broad range of interests.

Bennington serves a diverse student population inclusive of members of ethnically/racially minoritized, international, LGBTQIA+, and disability communities as well as diverse gender identities, socioeconomic backgrounds, religions, and political beliefs. Our staff and faculty also reflect diverse and intersecting backgrounds and identities. All employees are expected to be respectful and responsive to these differences in the service of building community that promotes student and employee success. Each individual (faculty, staff and students) will be accountable for upholding these values. The College’s approach to pluralism and inclusivity—both as fields of inquiry and practice—prioritizes flexible thought and invites the examination of access, value, power, and privilege through its institutional policies and areas of study. We encourage applicants from diverse realms of interest, backgrounds, experience, and accomplishment to apply.

Candidates for the position should apply online below. Applications should include: a) letter of application that describes teaching experience, professional work, and potential to contribute to a diverse and inclusive liberal arts setting; b) curriculum vitae; c) statement of teaching philosophy, including concise descriptions of three proposed courses; d) examples of, or links to, relevant recent professional work; e) statement of the candidate’s potential to contribute to an increasingly diverse and inclusive environment through teaching, research, and/or service; f) names and contact information for three references.

In recognition of the employment challenges sometimes faced by academic couples in small communities, the College will also consider applications to share equally a single full-time faculty position. Applicants must each submit an individual application and indicate in their cover letters that they are applying jointly.

Review of applications will begin November 1, 2021, and will continue until the position is filled. This position requires the successful completion and acceptable results of a background check.
